If you look at the samples that Joe Stagner gives for that ASP.NET AJAX is being maintained you will notice that it is not very much. Sure Visual Studio integration is great and all that, but they actually had lots of those parts finished already long time ago. They just bundled them a little bit "tighter" in the Visual Studio 2008 release than what they had for VS 2005.
